"Keith Haring"

An exhibition of huge works painted by Keith Haring in the 80’s remains on view through Saturday, June 14 at Gladstone Gallery. While all are characteristic of Haring’s boldly, playful aesthetic, some exude a dark social and political sensibility — referencing such themes as the AIDS crisis (pictured above), greed and economic inequality. Here’s a sampling:

"Erik den Breejen"

We discovered Erik den Breejen’s distinctly brilliant aesthetic when his mosaic-like portrait of David Bowie surfaced on the wall outside rag & bone off Houston Street last year.  Many more portraits of iconic figures of the 1970’s are now on view in There’s a Riot Goin’ On at Chelsea’s Freight + Volume Gallery.  Weaving text into patterns that create the portraits in his paintings, Brooklyn-based painter and musician Erik den Breejen takes us on a journey into his subjects’ minds and times. Here are a few:

Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On? (Note: The exhibit’s title is Sly and the Family Stone’s response: “There’s a riot goin’ on.”)

"John Ahearn and Rigoberto Torres"

A stunningly evocative selection of life-like sculptures by John Ahearn, made in collaboration with Rigoberto Torres, is currently on exhibit at Alexander and Bonin at 132 10th Avenue in Chelsea.  Fashioned between 1981 through 1991, the works on display are an ode to the spirit and soul of the folks who called the South Bronx home during that decade.

Hani Shihada

This past Saturday, the masterful chalk artist Hani Shihada — known for his stunning images that have surfaced on NYC’s pavement for decades — brought his skills to FIT on 27th Street and 7th Avenue. On Monday, it was the students’ turn. Here are a few images captured on Monday afternoon from the project: 60 Artists/60 Pieces/#Chalk FIT:

We love JR and José Parlá’s The Wrinkles of the City, Havana not only for its exquisite beauty, but also for the artists’ mission. While in Cuba last year, JR and José Parlá’ interviewed dozens of senior citizens, whose portraits made their way onto Havana’s walls. Twelve of them featuring JR’s masterful photos fused with José Parlá’s stunning calligraphy can be seen through July 12 at Bryce Wolkowitz in Chelsea. Here are a few from this must-see exhibit:

"LNY street art"

Chelsea’s Eyebeam Art + Technology Center has a new look.  Celebrated street artists LNY and Nanook, along with South Korean multi-media artist Taeyoon Choi, recently graced the exterior of Eyebeam, lending it a playfully provocative urban aesthetic. Here are a few images:

"Betten on the High Line"

Within the last year, New York City’s High Line — a huge public park atop an elevated rail structure —  has evolved into one of the city’s most intriguing open-air galleries.  Stretching from Manhattan’s Meatpacking District to Midtown, it features views of an eclectic range of both commissioned and unsanctioned pieces.  Here are a few images recently captured:
